Highway 1 Brewing Company

Highway 1 Brewing is a brewpub located north of Santa Cruz on a bluff overlooking the ocean alongside California’s Highway 1 near the town of Pescadaero. Looking out from the bar and dining room’s large picture windows you see the brewery’s namesake, California’s Highway 1, some beach and then nothing but miles of blue ocean. On the backside of Highway 1 Brewing you will find their Beer Garden, which has some picnic tables and games such as cornhole. At night, the Beer Garden features fire pits and overhead string lights.

The menu at Highway 1 Brewing Company is diverse and includes brunch specials, such as Chicken and Waffles, in addition to the regular menu that includes a variety of items that you would expect to find in a pub.

Highway 1 Brewing Company – Bottom Line

Highway 1 Brewing Company is a new brewery on the scene; it just opened in early 2013 and the staff is not the most responsive and could use some fine tuning, but hey who couldn’t. The brewery is a definitely a destination brewery since there is nothing else around that would draw people there, but this is one of the things that makes Highway 1 Brewing great; it is kind of just out there, trying to figure things out. The view from the bar and dining room is pretty spectacular as far as breweries go, and there are only a handful of other breweries that can match the view you will find here.

Highway 1 Brewing is still refining their brewing process and scaling up to meet the demands of their growing customer base, on several visits to the brewery they have run out of their house beers, but had backups in other locally brewed beers from other breweries. Our favorite beer, and what seems to be the most demanded beer is their French and Mexican War, which is a Saison style beer finished with jalapeños, making for beer that starts on the sweeter side and ends with a bit of a spicy bite, in a good way. The French and Mexican War often sells out quickly, usually only lasting a little over a week or so after being tapped. Our second favorite beer at Highway 1 is the Pepper in the Rye, which is a smooth drinking rye ale that is great for enjoying in their beer garden.

Bottom line is that Highway 1 Brewing is one of our staple breweries in the bay area and is a good way to spend a lazy weekend day, but beware their service is terrible and do not buy their growlers as they do not refill them consistently, often saying they do not have the supply to fill them.
