Firehouse Brewery in Sunnyvale is large bar and grill with different rooms and seating areas, and is adorned here and there with some memorabilia from real firehouses and firemen. Firehouse Brewery also has a large emphasis on sports, in fact they bill themselves as a “neighborhood sports brewery”. Their house brews are often rotating, but their staples seem to be Hops on Rye, Blonde Bombshell, Firehouse IPA, and One Tun Imperial Stout.
Firehouse Brewery – Sunnyvale – Bottom Line
Firehouse Brewery is first and foremost a sports bar, it is not a brewery that you would expect in the purest sense of the word. This is a place that you can get your big brewery beers such as Coors Light and virtually any liquor as you would expect at any sports bar. Like any sports bar there are also an abundance of high-def TV’s, fired bar food, and fanatical sports fans, Firehouse Brewery is no exception, and they add to the mix waitresses wearing short pleated skirts. While we love sports bars, they often don’t mesh well with breweries, and people that love breweries. In fact the only place that we have seen this mix well is in Tempe, at Four Peaks Brewing Company, but even then they did not mix it full time, only on Saturdays and Sundays during football season and during other major sporting events. That said, this is one of the best sports bars that I have seen in the bay area.
The house brews served at Firehouse are fairly hoppy, but otherwise pretty average or rough, they are not the refined craft brews I look for in at traditional breweries.
The bottom line on Firehouse Brewery in Sunnyvale is go, with a catch. Go if you are looking for a sports bar, don’t go if you are looking for a great neighborhood brewery, as Firehouse is just a sports bar and grill, albeit a great one. On a side note, all of what I said above does not apply to Firehouse’s East Palo Alto location, which is terrible, and you should avoid at all costs.
